Background of Challenge

Challenge is a not-for-profit organisation that supports children and families living with cancer. Established in 1983, Challenge provided an annual camping experience for children and young people living with cancer. By 1990 Challenge had expanded from a valuable camping program to become one of the first organisations in Australia to provide a range of ongoing support and recreational activities for families living with cancer. The organisation has continued to grow and develop to meet the changing needs of its members. It now delivers a full range of programs and support services, 365 days a year.

In 2011, the Challenge Family Centre was launched. The first of its kind in Australia, this centre offers children and their families access to an extensive range of non-medical support services including playgroup, music and art therapy, massage therapy and other resources.

The day-to-day operations involve engaging with families from the time of diagnosis through the treatment period and beyond. With a focus on delivering personalised services, Challenge facilitates multiple activities for the whole family unit, including camping experiences, parent retreats, in-hospital services, and various forms of therapy. The organisation also provides financial assistance, scholarships, and support for families dealing with loss.

The COVID-19 pandemic inadvertently pushed Challenge to expand its national reach by adopting online communication methods for program delivery.

Our goal is to embed our social purpose in every interaction with our customers, so each new contract or contract renewal means we will donate to Challenge.Scott Mathrick, CTO, Kaine Mathrick Tech.

Expanding services in the digital age

The shift to online platforms enabled Challenge to deliver essential programs such as music and art therapy to children across the country. This digital transformation allowed them to reach rural and interstate families more efficiently.

The importance of IT support

With a need to streamline operations and enhance service delivery, Challenge turned to Kaine Mathrick Tech (KMT) for comprehensive IT support. Initially brought in to manage the back-end computer systems and IT services, KMT’s involvement expanded beyond technical support. KMT founders, Brad and Scott, recognised the value of Challenge’s mission and sought ways to contribute hands-on to the cause.

The challenges facing Challenge

In the pursuit of delivering critical services to children and families living with cancer, Challenge recognised the indispensable role of a robust IT infrastructure.

“The challenge we faced was finding an IT partner who was not only able to understand the unique needs of a non-profit organisation but also offered top-notch services without breaking the bank.”

Building a meaningful partnership

A growing entity itself, KMT engaged in an ongoing conversation with Challenge about its services and values. Impressed by KMT’s commitment to responsible financial management and impactful service delivery, Challenge recognised a shared ethos. This alignment of values became a foundation for a partnership that transcended conventional client-service provider relationships.

As Challenge experienced growth, its IT infrastructure required an overhaul. The organisation had initially partnered with another IT company but faced challenges with complacency and a diminishing level of service. The need for a proactive and dedicated IT partner led Challenge to reassess its options.

Transformative impact on Challenge

Over the years, KMT’s partnership with Challenge deepened. The engagement extended beyond mere technical support, with KMT staff actively participating in Challenge’s events. The mutual desire to give back to the community led to Challenge becoming the chosen charity for KMT’s philanthropic efforts.

Recognising the importance of technology in Challenge’s operations, KMT worked collaboratively to identify specific needs. The partnership culminated in the development of a technical scholarship for some of the children Challenge supports, bridging the gap between technology and education. This bespoke initiative aligned with Challenge’s core values and showcased KMT’s commitment to making a meaningful impact.

“As a result of the partnership, we’ve been able to not only overcome immediate IT challenges but also explore innovative ways to enhance our services.” David Rogers.

The Solution

As the digital landscape evolved, the necessity for cloud adoption became paramount for the organisation. The existing infrastructure, relying on traditional servers, hindered progress and hampered service delivery. Additionally, the reliance on an obsolete database further complicated matters, with initial assessments suggesting incompatibility with cloud migration. Confronted with the prospect of substantial costs for a new database, the organisation sought a solution that aligned with its budgetary constraints.

A strategic approach

The first step to a seamless solution involved guiding Challenge through the intricacies of cloud migration. Understanding the importance of a smooth transition, KMT provided tailored advice and guidance to ensure a successful shift from on-premise servers to the cloud.

Overcoming database compatibility hurdles

The crux of the challenge lay in the compatibility of Challenge’s database with the cloud environment. KMT’s dedicated team invested substantial effort to address this concern. Through meticulous analysis and collaboration, KMT identified and implemented strategic alterations to the database. This ensured that the database remained functional in the cloud, preserving its capabilities, and meeting the organisation’s specific requirements.

“We needed their expertise. And they didn’t speak computer speak, they spoke in a way we could understand so we knew how it was all going to work. That made the transition easy, and I think that is incredibly important.” David Rogers.

The result: a seamless transition and sustainable database usage

Through deep collaboration and a commitment to finding innovative solutions, KMT facilitated Challenge’s successful transition to the cloud. The original database, once deemed incompatible, now operates seamlessly in the cloud environment. The strategic alterations implemented by KMT ensured not only the preservation of functionalities but also the cost-effective continuation of database usage.

“What we have now is a solution that did more than address immediate challenges, but also laid the foundation for a sustainable and technologically advanced future for Challenge.” David Rogers.

Building a supportive partnership

The success of this cloud transformation project solidified the partnership. Regular meetings and ongoing communication have become integral to the relationship, fostering an environment of continuous improvement. KMT’s staff actively engaged with the organisation during various exercises, establishing a face-to-face connection that enhanced the collaborative spirit of the partnership, and continues to this day.

Challenge is now poised to embark on the next stage of its partnership with KMT, having laid the foundations for future growth, agility, and innovation. The commitment demonstrated by KMT in navigating the complexities of cloud migration and database compatibility underscores its role as a strategic IT partner, ensuring Challenge’s technological landscape is not just fit for today, but fit for tomorrow.

The future is bright

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, progress is paramount. For Challenge, the complexities lie not only in embracing innovation but also in fortifying its security measures.
